Owens Corning Shingle Repair: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
If you have missing, cracked, or wind-lifted Owens Corning shingles on your Orlando roof, repair typically runs $325 to $675 for a small section and $900 to $1,800 for a larger repair involving decking or underlayment replacement. Most small Owens Corning shingle repairs take a half day once we’re on site. You’ll usually notice the problem two ways: a shingle tab shows up in the yard after a storm, or you spot a dark patch on the roof from the street that wasn’t there last season. Given Orlando’s afternoon thunderstorms and the occasional tropical system, Owens Corning shingles with failed sealant strips or blown-off tabs don’t heal themselves, and waiting usually means water gets into places you’d rather it didn’t.

We work on Owens Corning shingle repairs regularly across Orlando, from Lake Nona to College Park to Winter Park. Grant Whitlock has done enough of these to know exactly what fails first on a Florida roof, and it’s rarely what the homeowner assumes. Before you start pricing anything, let’s get specific about what’s actually up there.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
Most Orlando homes with Owens Corning shingles have one of three lines: Oakridge, Duration, or Duration Storm. Oakridge is the common builder-grade architectural shingle. Duration is the step-up architectural with SureNail technology, the fabric-reinforced nailing zone that’s wider than a standard strip. Duration Storm is Durations built for high-wind zones with a stronger sealant and a Class 4 impact rating. In Orlando, we see a lot of Duration and Duration Storm because both are common choices for homes built after 2010 that need to meet Florida wind codes.
The part that fails on a shingle is rarely the shingle itself. The first point of failure is usually the sealant strip. Florida heat cycles expand and contract the shingle, and once the sealant lets go, the tab lifts. Wind gets under it, and either the tab tears at the nail line or the whole shingle comes off. The second failure point is the nail placement. If the original installer nailed too high, outside the SureNail zone, the shingle doesn’t have enough grip and wind pulls it loose. That’s a compatibility gotcha worth knowing: you can’t just replace a torn Owens Corning shingle with any architectural shingle from another brand, even if the color looks close. The exposure height, the nail-line geometry, and the thickness all have to match, or the new shingle won’t seat flush with the old ones, and you’ll see a visible hump every time the sun hits that slope.
We stock Owens Corning Duration and Oakridge shingles on the truck in the most common Orlando colorways, including Driftwood, Onyx Black, and Brownwood. For less common colors, we order direct and have it in two to three days. Owens Corning’s dimensional shingles have a 5-5/8 inch exposure standard, but we always measure the existing course before matching. Some older Orlando homes have Oakridge from the mid-2000s, and the exposure on those can run slightly off from current production. We match the existing roof, not the spec sheet. Mercer Roofing Co Orlando is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Owens Corning, but we install and repair using their shingles and follow their installation specs to keep any manufacturer warranty intact.

Signs Your Owens Corning Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Shingle tabs in the yard or driveway. After a storm, check the ground around your roofline. A single Owens Corning tab with a clean tear at the nail line means the sealant failed and the wind did the rest. What you’re seeing is the result, not the start, of the problem.
- Visible dark patches on the roof surface. From the street, look for spots that appear darker or shadowed compared to surrounding shingles. That’s often matting or missing granules, and on Owens Corning dimensional shingles it usually means the top layer of the tab has lost adhesion and is cupping or lifting.
- Lifted tabs you can see from the ground. If a corner of any shingle is turned up, even slightly, the sealant strip has let go. Rain driven at an angle, which Orlando gets every summer afternoon, will work under that tab and find the nail holes.
- Granules collecting in gutters. Some granule loss is normal, especially in the first year. But if you clean a gutter in March and it’s full again by July, your shingles are shedding. Owens Corning shingles lose granules faster in Florida than up north because the asphalt layer never really stops moving in the heat.
- Staining on the ceiling or walls under a roof slope. This is the late-stage signal. By the time water shows up inside, the shingle failure has likely been active for weeks or months. The leak usually starts at a failed shingle seam and works its way down to a ceiling joist before it becomes visible.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Orlando, a small Owens Corning shingle repair, meaning one to six shingles replaced with matching stock, runs $325 to $475. A mid-size repair, which usually involves replacing a run of shingles and the underlayment beneath them, lands around $500 to $800. A larger repair where the decking has rotted and the repair includes new OSB or plywood, new underlayment, and a run of Owens Corning shingles, will cost $900 to $1,800 depending on square footage and access. The range isn’t because we’re being vague. It’s because the price depends on what’s under the shingle once we lift it, and we won’t know that until we see it.
Every Owens Corning shingle repair we quote includes the shingles, the labor, the underlayment and fasteners, and haul-off of old material. There’s no separate line item for “miscellaneous” or a surprise trip charge. The written price you get before work starts is the price on the invoice. Every repair also carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the same shingle fails again within a year, we come back and make it right, free. That’s not a conditional promise or a “workmanship warranty subject to inspection.” It’s written on the quote.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things you can safely do from the ground: take photos of the damaged area for your own records, and clear the gutters so water has somewhere to go in the meantime. That’s it. Everything else means getting on the roof, and that’s where it goes wrong. Owens Corning dimensional shingles have to be nailed in the SureNail zone, and if you nail outside it, you void the shingle’s wind warranty and create a new failure point. Prying up the old shingle without breaking the tab below it is a skill that takes practice, and Florida heat softens shingles to the point where a homeowner with a flat bar tears more than they fix. A bad repair on a 150-degree roof deck in July is a fall risk and a leak risk. We’d rather you spend that afternoon indoors. Call (850) 757-3564 and we’ll send a background-checked, photo-badged technician who’s done this exact repair more times than we can count.
FAQs
Owens Corning Duration shingles carry a lifetime limited warranty, but in Orlando’s heat, the realistic serviceable life is 18 to 25 years before sealant failure becomes a recurring issue. The granule surface degrades faster here than in milder climates, and we see roofs that could go 30 years in Ohio start looking tired at year 20 in Orlando.
Sometimes, but not reliably. On a newer Owens Corning shingle where the tab has lifted but isn’t torn, a roofing adhesive applied under the tab can buy you time. On shingles older than 10 years, the sealant strip and the asphalt are both degraded, and the repair usually doesn’t hold through the next storm. We’ll tell you honestly which situation you have when we see it. Call (850) 757-3564 for an assessment.
A small repair, one to six shingles, takes one to two hours. A larger repair with decking replacement is a half-day job. Most Orlando homeowners schedule with us on a Tuesday and it’s done by Thursday.
We stock the most common Owens Corning Duration and Oakridge colors and granule blends on the truck. If your roof is a less common color, we’ll order it and schedule the repair once it arrives, usually within three days.
